NFL in Los Angeles

As you have all heard, the St. Louis Rams have relocated to Los Angeles. They will actually play at the Coliseum for a couple of seasons before playing in Inglewood, CA when their new stadium gets built.

Let’s be honest; the Rams should not have left LA. Granted, they won SB 34 in 1999, but St. Louis does not seem to be a football city. LA was a bargaining chip for NFL owners to use to get better stadium deals for themselves, which is why it took 21 years for the league to cave in to various requests to have pro football in Los Angeles.

Outlook: The survival of the NFL in LA depends on two things; 1, Winning. If a team there does not win, the fans can just flock to one of countless beaches or ski slopes in the San Bernardino Mountains. No one here wants to see a bad team. 2...

Concussions

In the past nine years during Commissioner Roger Goodell’s tenure, the impacts of head injuries, most notably concussions, has been brought to light. There was a lawsuit, class-action, against the NFL in which a settlement was reached. People have had myriad mental health conditions as a result of playing football for several years, growing up, in college, and/or in the pros. In recent years the NFL, NCAA, and high school and below have made strides to make the game safer. But it is not enough. To make the game truly safe, there has to be changes in the development of foorball players and technique used to tackle and block.

Let’s start with Pop Warner football, Head injuries at a very young age in a persons life can adversely affect their cognitive development in future years...

The Fall of a Dynasty?

Throughout the course of history, nations rose and fell. The same rings true with sports franchises. In the case of the Los Angeles Lakers, they have had success their entire time in LA. From 1979 through 2012-13 they had missed the postseason only twice.

In the fall of 2013, the team fell on rough times and still has not recovered. Since then they missed the playoffs twice and this season does not look like much of an improvement, since many expect the Lakers’ to miss the playoffs for the third straight season.

The link to five of those championships, Kobe Bryant, is likely in his final season of his career and he has been resting more than playing, so the torch needs to be passed. This player could lead the Lakers’ back to the promised land.

Is this player on the roster? DeAngelo Russell...

MidSeason Report Cards

This season has been surprising for myriad reasons. Injuries have taken its toll on a lot of teams, while some teams have been fortunate in this regard. Needless to say, each grade on my report card reflects the performance to expectation ratio, that is, if your team is playing better than expected, you’ll get a B or an A; worse than expected, D or F. So without further ado. Here is my report card, offense and defense, and total grade.

Aaron Hernandez Convicted of 1st-degree murder

Now that former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has been convicted and sentenced to life in prison with no shot at parole, I’m going to give you my thoughts on the case. They are:

1. Why did the defense only call three witnesses? Why didn’t they put forth a better effort? Right now no one knows, but the prosecution, even with circumstantial evidence, still managed to get a jury of twelve to convict Mr. Hernandez of first-degree homicide.

2. Did the jury know about the other case, the double-homicide in 2012? If so, they might have been biased, therefore depriving Mr. Hernandez of a fair trial.

I expect at some point in the future that there will be a retrial or even a overturning of the verdict because of these facts.

Elimination of the Purple and Gold

It hasn’t officially happened yet, but it appears, for the first time in my life the Los Angeles Lakers will be eliminated from postseason contention in consecutive seasons. And, barring some good fortune in the 2015 offseason, I can see a three-peat of the Lakers being eliminated from the playoffs before they commence when they’re eliminated in ’15-’16. They’re awful.

I think it’s finally time to move on from Kobe. He’s been injured, season ending, three Years consecutively. If Jim Buss is as serious about contending as he sounds, he needs to amnesty Kobe. Coaching is not the problem; he (Buss) needs to sign a 7-footer or two and draft a quality point guard. That’s just what I think needs to happen if the Lake Show is going to return to greatness...

Fall from Grace

As a lot of you out there know, as recently as five years ago, the Los Angeles Lakers were NBA Champions. Ever since then, the quality of play has sharply declined due to aging players and highlighted by the death of Dr. Jerry Buss. The ineptitude of Jim Buss, Jerry’s son, is being exposed as a poor evaluator of coaching talent. I predict the Los Angeles Lakers will be like the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals back in the 1990s, after the death of Paul Brown. That, unless GM Mitch Kupchak keeps having superstar potential in his hands in the draft. I like Julius Randle and it was very unfortunate that Randle severely broke his leg early in the ’14-’15 season.

I might be proven wrong, though. Randle will make a full recovery...

Not what I hoped

As a lifelong Dodger fan, I am disappointed in the team for yet again failing to reach the World Series. Who is to blame? Some have said the manager, which I agree with. Others have said the pitcher who was left in the game too long on three days rest. Yet others say the front office is culpable for the team for having such a horrible bullpen, causing the manager to leave the starting pitcher in too long.

The window of opportunity won’t remain open forever, L.A. Dodger players, coaches, and executives. Get it together or you might go down in baseball infamy as a team who is great in the regular season but can’t stay focused on the big prize; the World Series Championship.

Baseball Playoffs

Are you ready for the MLB Postseason? FOX Sports 1 and TBS have the games leading up to the World Series.

The classic potential matchup in the National League Championship Series (NLCS) would be the Los Angeles Dodgers vs. The San Francisco Giants. The Yankees and Red Sox of the West Coast. Right now in the NLDS SF leads Washington 2 games to 0 and LA is tied with St. Louis 1 game apiece. If LA and SF meet in the NLCS, I expect LA to win in six games if their manager handles things correctly. They are far more talented than the Giants. The only way for the Giants to win is if the Dodgers leave their starting pitcher in too long, like in Game 1 of this year’s series vs. STL. I don’t see that happening again.

Who will win if these two teams matchup in the NLCS? LA defeats SF in six or seven ...
